Community of practice member: open to all (existing YPID site): Join an international community of practice which bridges youth led movements, post secondary educational institutions, research-practitioners, UN agencies, foundations and other partners.

      2. Subscription: as a subscriber of YPID you will receive monthly updates from the widespread educational resources emerging from the applied activities with youth lead projects, latest research, video lectures, podcasts and links to educational initiatives undertaken by ourselves and our friends

      3. Certificate courses and educational "badges": Take on-line courses for certificate on a variety of subjects including: youth led community research; mediation and conflict resolution and peace-building; the application of social media for social justice; applied human rights, and youth in governance

      4. Enroll in an interdisciplinary Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate specialization in Youth Partners in Development through the Royal Roads University, IICRD partnership program. Offered via an on line/residency program various regions of the world. Emphasizing a "reflexive" model of community practice for youth engaged in community development and broader social justice work, Masters and Doctorates for scholar practitioners focusing on in depth research and policy development.

Your feedback will shape and guide our identity, structure, and resources at this earliest of stages.
The Future of Youth Movements Summit February 16-17 2012 NYC tag:youngpartnersindevelopment.org,2012-05-30:2928733:BlogPost:35958 2012-05-30T05:00:00.000Z Jon Ramer /profile/JonRamer
The Future of Youth Movements Summit was convened in New York on February 16-17 to gain insight from organizations, institutions, and individuals on the development of a collaborative network of youth-led and youth-serving organizations. The objectives of the event were to model competencies, identify points of collaboration, and strengthen understanding and alignment across the youth sector to maximize collective impact. In addition, the summit featured the launch of the YouthMovements platform, including an interactive map and knowledge hub.

Through a creative process of facilitation, participants identified key areas of focus upon which a cohesive network will evolve. The mission of YouthMovements.org was defined by the participants as an inclusive youth-centered network to create awareness, gather evidence, share insights, and leverage our collective power to amplify youth action for local, national, and global impact.

To communicate the spirit and need and YouthMovements.org, key stakeholders of youth-led and youth serving organizations were consulted and involved in creating the ‘Declaration of Interdependence’:

We are connected.
We are many.
We all dream of a better world.

The pace of change is accelerating and the challenges we face are more global and complex than ever before.

We need new ways of thinking and working collaboratively to address these issues.
We must work inclusively across cultures, organizations, generations, and networks to champion the role of youth.

We will challenge old paradigms, move beyond divisions, and hold our leaders accountable.

We can harness technology to co-create a peaceful, sustainable planet for all.

Together, we will help to grow young people as leaders; enabling them to change the world.

Here is the final report from the summit.
Greetings Members! There are now over 240 members in over 90 countries and the number of visits has increased over 100% since the CRIP Learning Forum conference. It seems fitting that this first month would include the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The CRIP social network has plenty of great content on the topic.

Convention on the Rights of the Child
Elise posted a news item about the Release of UNICEF flagship report, 'The State of the World's Children' Special Edition. Roxane Schury posted a press release from Save the Children encouraging US Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child
We also posted a video with an insightful report from Aljazeera - US yet to sign UN child rights treaty. I was inspired to see Ismail Mohamed Abdi, a member from Somaliland, post an album of photos celebrating the convention in Somaliland. Here is the album:

Even-though Somaliland is not a recognized country internationally, wonderful activities for celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the CRC has been carried out in major towns of Somaliland. The CRIP site also has a slide show on the Articles of the Convention, a video animation of the convention for children and Adem Arkadas-Thibert added a news post about Children's videos for CRC@20.

Share Your News about Child Rights in Practice
The news section lists items posted chronologically. Dr. Philip Cook recently posted: “Weaving the Thaise” Creating a child centred, culturally grounded child protection system in Timor Leste. It was great to read this kind of thoughtful sharing coming from Dr. Cook, who is up to so many activities in so many places all connected to realizing the rights of the child. For those who attended the conference they probably remember Philip committing during the Dream Catcher to increasing his participating on the social network… bravo to Philip for keeping his word!

All members are welcome to add a news post on a topic you deem relevant to the network. What are you doing? and What do you see others doing worth sharing with the network? No participation, no development. The discussion has evolved to Maria Lucia Mesa proposing to collaborate and pilot Gerison’s tools in Columbia.

This is an example of the value of a social network; sharing our work in ways that contribute to each others capacities to be effective and successful. What would your work be like if you were connected to “all the right people”? Perhaps you are!

There is also an open discussion on Jobs, Internships, Opportunities Postings if you know of any please add them. Recently there was a job posting for working with the IICRD in Southeast Asia. Maria is also in discussion with Camilo Guageta about participation in an International Training Program on Child Rights, Classroom and School Management that looks like another great opportunity.

Growing the Social Networking Site
Elise, Holly and I are working to creatively grow our network. Our social network has over 200 members and visitors from over 80 countries! How can these connections strengthen and develop the work we shared and created at the CRIP Learning Forum? The network gives us access to colleagues who can become allies for moving our work forward, personally and collectively. What's next is learning how to participate, contribute, and be contributed to. The answers are literally in our hands.

In this news post we highlight materials from the conference, offer a few suggestions on how to engage on the network, and invite you to join us for a one hour online CRIP basic training session on Thursday, November 12th (details below). We’ll conduct these sessions through the phone and computer; anyone, anywhere on the planet with an internet connection can join either of the two training sessions scheduled for Thursday.

Our network is an “ecosystem” that naturally includes creators, commenters, collectors, joiners, spectators, as well as inactives; it really does take a village. Boy, no pressure there. But let's begin with the startling part. Hey, Class of 2009: you are going to have to figure out what it means to be a human being on earth at a time when every living system is declining, and the rate of decline is accelerating. Kind of a mind-boggling situation... but not one peer-reviewed paper published in the last thirty years can refute that statement. Basically, the earth needs a new operating system, you are the programmers, and we need it within a few decades. This planet came with a set of operating instructions, but we seem to have misplaced them. Important rules like don't poison the water, soil, or air, and don't let the earth get overcrowded, and don't touch the thermostat have been broken.

Buckminster Fuller said that spaceship earth was so ingeniously designed that no one has a clue that we are on one, flying through the universe at a million miles per hour, with no need for seatbelts, lots of room in coach, and really good food, but all that is changing.

There is invisible writing on the back of the diploma you will receive, and in case you didn't bring lemon juice to decode it, I can tell you what it says: YOU ARE BRILLIANT, AND THE EARTH IS HIRING.

The earth couldn't afford to send any recruiters or limos to your school. It sent you rain, sunsets, ripe cherries, night blooming jasmine, and that unbelievably cute person you are dating. Take the hint. And here's the deal: Forget that this task of planet-saving is not possible in the time required. Don't be put off by people who know what is not possible. Do what needs to be done, and check to see if it was impossible only after you are done.

When asked if I am pessimistic or optimistic about the future, my answer is always the same: If you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren't pessimistic, you don't understand data. But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren't optimistic, you haven't got a pulse.

What I see everywhere in the world are ordinary people willing to confront despair, power, and incalculable odds in order to restore some semblance of grace, justice, and beauty to this world. The poet Adrienne Rich wrote, "So much has been destroyed I have cast my lot with those who, age after age, perversely, with no extraordinary power, reconstitute the world." There could be no better description.

Humanity is coalescing. It is reconstituting the world, and the action is taking place in schoolrooms, farms, jungles, villages, campuses, companies, refugee camps, deserts, fisheries, and slums. You join a multitude of caring people. No one knows how many groups and organizations are working on the most salient issues of our day: climate change, poverty, deforestation, peace, water, hunger, conservation, human rights, and more. This is the largest movement the world has ever seen.

Rather than control, it seeks connection. Rather than dominance, it strives to disperse concentrations of power. Like Mercy Corps, it works behind the scenes and gets the job done. Large as it is, no one knows the true size of this movement. It provides hope, support, and meaning to billions of people in the world. Its clout resides in idea, not in force. It is made up of teachers, children, peasants, businesspeople, rappers, organic farmers, nuns, artists, government workers, fisher folk, engineers, students, incorrigible writers, weeping Muslims, concerned mothers, poets, doctors without borders, grieving Christians, street musicians, the President of the United States of America, and as the writer David James Duncan would say, the Creator, the One who loves us all in such a huge way. There is a rabbinical teaching that says if the world is ending and the Messiah arrives, first plant a tree, and then see if the story is true.

Inspiration is not garnered from the litanies of what may befall us; it resides in humanity's willingness to restore, redress, reform, rebuild, recover, reimagine, and reconsider. "One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice," is Mary Oliver's description of moving away from the profane toward a deep sense of connectedness to the living world.
Millions of people are working on behalf of strangers, even if the evening news is usually about the death of strangers. This kindness of strangers has religious, even mythic origins, and very specific eighteenth-century roots.

Abolitionists were the first people to create a national and global movement to defend the rights of those they did not know. Until that time, no group had filed a grievance except on behalf of itself. The founders of this movement were largely unknown Granville Clark, Thomas Clarkson, Josiah Wedgwood and their goal was ridiculous on the face of it: at that time three out of four people in the world were enslaved. Enslaving each other was what human beings had done for ages. And the abolitionist movement was greeted with incredulity. Conservative spokesmen ridiculed the abolitionists as liberals, progressives, do-gooders, meddlers, and activists. They were told they would ruin the economy and drive England into poverty.

But for the first time in history a group of people organized themselves to help people they would never know, from whom they would never receive direct or indirect benefit. And today tens of millions of people do this every day. It is called the world of non-profits, civil society, schools, social entrepreneurship, and non-governmental organizations, of companies who place social and environmental justice at the top of their strategic goals.

The scope and scale of this effort is unparalleled in history. The living world is not "out there" somewhere, but in your heart. What do we know about life? In the words of biologist Janine Benyus, life creates the conditions that are conducive to life. I can think of no better motto for a future economy.

We have tens of thousands of abandoned homes without people and tens of thousands of abandoned people without homes. We have failed bankers advising failed regulators on how to save failed assets. Think about this: we are the only species on this planet without full employment. Brilliant. We have an economy that tells us that it is cheaper to destroy earth in real time than to renew, restore, and sustain it. You can print money to bail out a bank but you can't print life to bail out a planet.

At present we are stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it gross domestic product. We can just as easily have an economy that is based on healing the future instead of stealing it. We can either create assets for the future or take the assets of the future. One is called restoration and the other exploitation. And whenever we exploit the earth we exploit people and cause untold suffering.

Working for the earth is not a way to get rich, it is a way to be rich. The first living cell came into being nearly 40 million centuries ago, and its direct descendants are in all of our bloodstreams. Literally you are breathing molecules this very second that were inhaled by Moses, Mother Teresa, and Bono. We are vastly interconnected. Our fates are inseparable.

We are here because the dream of every cell is to become two cells. In each of you are one quadrillion cells, 90 percent of which are not human cells. Your body is a community, and without those other microorganisms you would perish in hours. Each human cell has 400 billion molecules conducting millions of processes between trillions of atoms. The total cellular activity in one human body is staggering: one septillion actions at any one moment, a one with twenty-four zeros after it.

In a millisecond, our body has undergone ten times more processes than there are stars in the universe exactly what Charles Darwin foretold when he said science would discover that each living creature was a "little universe, formed of a host of self-propagating organisms, inconceivably minute and as numerous as the stars of heaven."

So I have two questions for you all: First, can you feel your body? Stop for a moment. Feel your body. One septillion activities going on simultaneously, and your body does this so well you are free to ignore it, and wonder instead when this speech will end. Second question: who is in charge of your body? Who is managing those molecules? Hopefully not a political party. Life is creating the conditions that are conducive to life inside you, just as in all of nature. What I want you to imagine is that collectively humanity is evincing a deep innate wisdom in coming together to heal the wounds and insults of the past.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television.

This extraordinary time when we are globally aware of each other and the multiple dangers that threaten civilization has never happened, not in a thousand years, not in ten thousand years. Each of us is as complex and beautiful as all the stars in the universe. We have done great things and we have gone way off course in terms of honoring creation. You are graduating to the most amazing, challenging, stupefying challenge ever be quested to any generation. The generations before you failed. They didn't stay up all night. They got distracted and lost sight of the fact that life is a miracle every moment of your existence. Nature beckons you to be on her side. You couldn't ask for a better boss. The most unrealistic person in the world is the cynic, not the dreamer. Hopefulness only makes sense when it doesn't make sense to be hopeful. This is your century. Take it and run as if your life depends on it.

----

Paul Hawken is a renowned entrepreneur, visionary environmental activist, and author of many books, most recently Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming.

He was presented with an honorary doctorate of humane letters by University president Father Bill Beauchamp, C.S.C., in May, when he delivered this superb speech. Our thanks especially to Erica Linson for her help making that moment possible. www.paulhawken.com The Rise of the Social Nervous System tag:youngpartnersindevelopment.org,2009-03-13:2928733:BlogPost:741 2009-03-13T03:30:00.000Z Jon Ramer /profile/JonRamer An article from Forbes magazine talking about the power of the Internet to connect us in new ways.

The Rise Of The Social Nervous System

Joshua-Michele Ross, 03.09.09

SEBASTOPOL, Calif.--No corner of modern American life is untouched by technology. And no technology is more transformative than the Internet. The simple reason for this is that the Internet is, at bottom, a communications network, and communication is the foundation of society, business and government. When you scale up communications, you change the world.

There are now at least 1.6 billions of us connected via computer and 3 billion mobile devices that touch the Internet. The rise of "social" technologies--such as wikis, blogs, Twitter, SMS and social networks--means that the barriers to participation across the planet (in terms of the cost, access and skills required) are rapidly approaching zero.

As ever more people get connected, we see an acceleration in the way the Internet is used to coordinate action and render services from human input. We are witnessing the rise of a social nervous system. Consider these three cases:

Emergency Response
The Mumbai attacks showcased the use of Twitter as a real-time, peer-to-peer information service. Throughout the event, people twittered the movement of the attackers. The police were on the service admonishing people not to disclose their own movements. Though there was criticism of whether or not the details were accurate (the BBC was criticized for integrating Twitter into its reporting), the larger point is that this real-time communication system influenced the physical behavior on the ground in Mumbai. This is a key point about the social nervous system: It coordinates (and sometimes directs) physical activity in the world.

Coordinating Political Action
The Obama campaign's Houdini project on election day used real-time data from polling stations to adjust its "get out the vote" program. As one participant noted, poll observers "took the real-time results of who actually showed up at the polls and fed it back to the campaign so that they could adjust their GOTV calls and canvassing as the day wore on. Every time someone came in to vote, their names were entered into a computer system, and their names disappeared or escaped, Houdini-like, from the call and walk lists."

Global Virus Forecasting
As millions of users search for health information, Google uses the aggregate of these searches to estimate flu activity even in very localized regions. This information has been shown to estimate flu activity two weeks earlier (a life-age for influenza) than the CDC forecast methods.

Watch the news, and you will see daily evidence of how a system that connects billions of people is influencing the physical world--from recent protests in California against Proposition 8 organized by Facebook to the riots in my hometown of Oakland after several witnesses uploaded video taken from their mobile phones of a police shooting. New services such as Qik are now bringing live mobile camera feeds online (think Webcams for mobile phones). That will make what happened in Oakland a small foretaste of what is likely to come. I used Twitter during the Oakland riot to stay updated on local transit outages and plot a new route home from work.

It is easy to confuse this concept with the emerging field of machine learning such as the smart energy grid, traffic control using the sensor Web or the Planetary Skin Initiative recently announced by Nasa and Cisco. Machine optimization is useful but hardly social: Human beings do not contribute the data, share it or act upon it. And the implications of a social nervous system are far more profound than simply a "smart" grid.

The social nervous system makes us aware of a broader context of relationship with humanity. My immediate relationships--with my family, my city and state--begin to span the globe. We can leverage the ubiquity of communications to coordinate real world activity--and just about anyone can do it. Even a kid with a mobile phone can capture a revolution.
Using a social nervous system, we are finding solutions to some big problems such as controlling disease or responding to emergencies. Most important, we are creating a feedback mechanism that exposes the actions of a powerful few to the many--and the trivial day-to-day life of the many to the whole of humanity.

It is no coincidence that "transparency" is a catch phrase in government and business these days. It is a natural byproduct of this emerging social nervous system. The social nervous system engenders a healthier balance of power in society and helps to connect our individual actions into a larger context in a clear way.

Another outcome of the social nervous system is that we see the shift away from privacy as an inalienable right to an individual responsibility. In a social nervous system there will be increasing pressure to be connected 24/7 to the hive mind that is Facebook, Twitter and so on. Those who do not connect, share and collaborate will have a hard time in business and in social life.

Older generations expect that digital natives will one day wish to erase all their indiscreet photos online. But I don't believe this nonstop exposure will go away as the digital natives mature. Our lives are increasingly being logged on the Internet. It is part of the trade. Given the complexity and precarious position of the modern world, getting people to genuinely reach out and touch their neighbors is a good thing but it will come at the price of reshaping our identities as part of a larger, interconnected whole.

As vice president with O'Reilly Radar, Joshua-Michéle Ross runs O'Reilly Media's consulting practice, helping clients apply Web 2.0 principles.
